Health and Safety: Your Responsibilities as a Learner

Contents

Health and Safety

Your health, safety and wellbeing are important throughout your apprenticeship.

Whether you’re learning online, attending a training session or working in your workplace, everyone has a responsibility to help create a safe environment.

Looking after yourself and others

As a learner, you should:

  • Take reasonable care of your own health and safety
  • Take reasonable care of the health and safety of others who may be affected by your actions
  • Follow health and safety instructions and workplace procedures
  • Cooperate with your employer and training provider on health, safety and welfare matters
  • Use equipment and resources safely
  • Report hazards or concerns when you identify them

Your workplace will have its own health and safety policies and procedures, so make sure you know where to find them and who to speak to if you have a concern.

If you have an accident

If you have an accident or sustain an injury while taking part in your training programme, make sure it is reported through the appropriate process.

Speak to your employer and Development Coach if you are unsure what you need to do.

What if you don’t feel safe?

If something is making you feel unsafe, don’t ignore it.

You can speak to:

  • Your employer or line manager
  • Your Development Coach
  • The appropriate workplace safeguarding or health and safety lead
  • Our safeguarding team where appropriate

If you’re in immediate danger or there is an emergency, call 999.

Staying safe online

Your apprenticeship may involve online learning, video calls and digital platforms.

Remember to:

  • Keep your passwords secure
  • Don’t share personal or confidential information
  • Use appropriate and professional behaviour online
  • Follow your employer’s rules around technology and data
  • Report anything that makes you feel unsafe

If you’re unsure whether something is safe or appropriate, ask.

Your safety matters, and we’re here to help.
