Overcoming obstacles: Lorna Campion’s apprenticeship experience

Lorna Campion is a credit to her employers at HFT. Not only did she take on a Level 5 Leader in Adult Care qualification and win; but she faced a challenge on the morning of her End-Point Assessment (EPA) professional discussion, which she courageously overcame.

Join tend now as we sit down with Lorna, to talk about her experience, and her hopes for the future career in adult care.

Overcoming the unforeseen

Great to catch up with you, Lorna! Tell everyone a little bit about yourself.

My name is Lorna Campion. I am the Deputy Manager at HFT Clementi Court – Worcestershire. I am here today to share my feedback after recently completing my Level 5 Leader in Adult Care apprenticeship.

Congratulations on the completion of your course! What stood out for you the most on your apprenticeship journey?

I would have to say it was my Development Coach – Emma Bonner. She helped me to excel in my performance, and to produce a better quality of work. With Emma’s support, my knowledge and skill set grew, which played a major part in preparing me for my End-Point Assessment (EPA).

Tell us a little bit about that. How were you feeling as you entered the EPA stage of your programme?

I have autism, and at the time of my professional discussion (EPA), I was experiencing an autistic burn out, and had become very overwhelmed. The morning of my assessment, I believed that I would not be able to sit my exam due to my high levels of anxiety.

The assessors had put reasonable adjustments in place for me; but in the morning of the exam, the End-Point assessor, Lorraine Parkinson, gave me time to regulate my emotions, and ensured that I felt comfortable.

That’s amazing to hear. How did it go after that?

Loraine’s knowledge and skillset shown through during my End-Point assessment. She really is an asset to the organisation she works for. Once I felt able to do so, I began my Professional Discussion exam. Lorraine’s skillset in managing the situation allowed me to continue with something I was going to cancel at the start of the day, and allowed me to achieve something I knew deep down I could do. I am very grateful that she was knowledgeable on how to support someone with additional needs, but still maintained her professional boundaries and exam conditions.

Wow. You overcame how you were feeling, got the support you needed, and completed your programme. That’s an incredible achievement!

Thank you. At the start of my journey, I didn’t feel confident. But, I went on to achieve a Distinction! I am grateful that I had Emma as my Development Coach. I truly believe her support is what aided me in success. I hope this feedback is shared both with Emma and Lorraine, it is important that they know how much of a difference they made during my Level 5 journey.

"I am grateful that I had Emma as my Development Coach. I truly believe her support is what aided me in success."
