Celebrating the people who make apprenticeships work

National Apprenticeship Week 2026 – Celebration Friday

Celebration Friday is about more than marking the end of National Apprenticeship Week. It’s about pausing to recognise the people, the progress, and the collective commitment making apprenticeships so meaningful to millions every single year.

At tend, we believe apprenticeships have the most impact when people are placed at the centre of it all. It’s not all qualifications, frameworks, and funding. Real success isn’t measured by a mere certificate. The value lies in the confidence gained, skills applied, support given and received, and futures shaped forever.

Today, tend celebrates the people behind the progress.

Our apprentices

The apprentices themselves are the reason we do what we do. The intrepid individuals who show up open-minded and hopeful-hearted, ready to learn, and often juggling work, families, personal commitments, and the quiet pressure they place on themselves to get it all right all of the time.

Many apprentices:

  • Begin their journey feeling a little daunted
  • Haven’t been in education for several years
  • Are professionals taking a new direction in their career journey
  • Are entering into a completely new sector

No matter the circumstances that bring people into apprenticeships, what we see repeatedly is how much each learner evolves.

Through structured learning, consistent support, and real-world application, apprentices gradually begin to recognise their own potential. They find their voice and rhythm. They take pride in their progress; not just in what they can do, but who they are becoming.

tend salutes all of the brave learners out there. The ones considering enrolment, the ones currently on-programme, and the ones who completed and are putting their new skills to good use in the UK care sector as we speak. Your courage in incalculable. Choosing to learn, grow, and believe in your own potential is endlessly admirable.

Our employers

Apprenticeships are never a solo journey. Employers play a vital role in creating environments where learning is encouraged, and development is valued.

tend works closely with employers who see apprenticeships as more than a short-term solution. Employers who look to utilise our programmes to upskill their care teams understand that:

  • This type of learning is a long-term investment in a stalwart workforce
  • Creating space for learning and development in the work environment matters
  • Offering guidance, patience, and trust is essential
  • Progress takes time, and that the results are worth the wait

When employers commit to apprenticeship training for their people, they are helping to build tomorrow’s care teams; workers who are tend-trained are skilled, motivated, and aligned with organisational needs and values. They’re actively growing talent from within, strengthening their staff is sustainable and significant ways.

Today, we applaud the continued commitment of the care providers who are championing transformation from the inside, empowering employees to evolve in ways that aren’t just valuable to individuals and organisations but to the entire sector.

Our Development Coaches

Behind every enthusiastic apprentice is a support network working quietly to ensure they never meander in their momentum. tend Development Coaches are the secret sauce in an ever-evolving recipe. They are a constant, providing structure, encouragement, direction, and reassurance to both learners and employers along the way.

tend Development Coaches are:

  • Sector-specific experts
  • There to help learners navigate both the academic and personal aspects of their journey
  • There to advise employers on how best to support the process
  • Always helping learners to reflect, refocus, and keep moving forward, even when things feel challenging

The impact of tend’s Development Coaches can never be understated. Their performance is profound, and their presence throughout the process is often the element that learners most frequently feel made their experience extra special. They are also a major contributor to our 98% End-Point Assessment (EPA) success rate.

Celebration Friday is a chance for us all to thank them for their unwavering dedication, empathy, and professionalism while delivering educational excellence in all that they do.

Celebrating people means progress over perfection

At tend, we don’t dwell on the learning journey being perfect. For one thing, perfection does not exist. For another, everyone is different. We bear in mind that:

  • Each learner has a different set of needs and learning styles
  • Every employer has a unique goal in mind
  • Every Development Coach has their own approach to teaching

Unlike traditional educational pathways, apprenticeships create space to mould the process to the person, rather than the person having to adapt to the process. It is probably the most personalised way to learn in the UK today.

Instead of perfection, the goal for all involved is progress. Steady, supported development allows people to move through their programme at a realistic pace, apply knowledge in context, and increase confidence through experience.

Even the smallest step forward is progress. It might be mastering a new skill, speaking up for the first time, or simply just refusing to give up.

Final thoughts

When apprentices succeed, everyone benefits:

  • Individuals gain self-assurance and capability
  • Employers build stronger teams
  • Communities benefit from skilled, motivated professionals
  • Development Coaches enjoy job satisfaction
  • Training providers can turn everyone’s successes into new opportunities through the development of new programmes, and cultivating collaborative partnerships

This is why apprenticeships are never about just one person or entity. They are a collective achievement built on a shared purpose.

tend is proud to support apprenticeships that are human-first, nurturing, and rooted in real-world impact. We are thrilled for the learners who commit to growth, the employers who invest in their people. The Development Coaches who guide our tend-trained professionals through the process, our wider team for making the magic happen, and the care sector for remaining robust in even the most challenging of times.

Beyond this week, the work doesn’t stop. Apprenticeships continue every day, in workplaces, in coaching sessions, in moments of reflection and achievement. Our organisation remains committed to creating careers with heart, skills with purpose, and lasting change that elevates excellence across all aspects of the care sector
