How apprenticeships open doors at every key career stage

National Apprenticeship Week 2026 – Opportunity Thursday
Learning throughout our lives used to look very different. People would spend their childhoods and teens in school, maybe go to college or university into their early twenties, and then the education portion of the journey was over, giving way to working life.
However, like everything else in our rapidly-changing world, the education landscape has evolved. Apprenticeships used to be associated with school leavers. The reality is far broader.
An apprentice can be a school leaver, sure – perhaps kicking off their care career as a Level 2 Adult Care Worker apprentice. But, it can also be an experienced, C-Suite executive studying their Level 7 Senior Leader apprenticeship with an ambition to move become Managing Director.
No matter where an individual is in their career right now, there is an apprenticeship for every stage of experience, designed specifically to take you to the next level of your career.
At tend, we call the Career Builders – apprenticeships that complement one another, forming the steps to progression.
Join us now as we take a deep dive into our Career Builders pathway, how it creates further opportunity at every step of the career journey, and how it enhances and elevates professionals.
Apprenticeships are for all people, at all levels
Apprenticeships aren’t only for one subset of people. In fact, they support a range of individuals, including:
- New entrants to the workforce
- Career changers seeking a fresh start
- Existing employees developing new skills
- People returning to work after a break
This means there is an apprenticeship for any person, of any age, in any circumstance, and at any stage of their career.
The tend Career Builders philosophy
The first step on the Career Builders pathway is figuring out the level the learner is at right now in their career, so that the right apprenticeship can be matched with them. It’s not about choosing an apprenticeship that matches where they are right now, but that fits with where they want to get to next in their working life.

For example, If you had already reached the professional stage of a Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker, you wouldn’t do the Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship. You’d do the Level 5 Senior Leader in Adult Care apprenticeship, because that would help you climb to the next rung of the professional ladder. Your sector-expert Development Coach would then work with you to tailor the learning to your specific needs and goals.
This is what’s fundamental about the tend Career Builders philosophy. It creates professional stepping stones, with a clear view of what you can do to go all the way to the top if you so choose.
A course for every career stage
With the Career Builders pathway in mind, whether you’re an employer structuring an employee’s progression journey, or an individual figuring out what your next career move should be, there is an apprenticeship that is designed to get you to your desired destination.
Let’s take one example. Say you’re just starting out in your career, and you begin as a Healthcare Support Worker apprentice; but your ambition is to be a Senior Leader. How would you get there?
Here is one Career Builders pathway you could take is:
- Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship
- Level 3 Aspiring Leaders in Healthcare apprenticeship
- Level 5 Visionary Leaders in Healthcare apprenticeship
- Level 7 Senior Leader apprenticeship
The durations of these courses are shorter than traditional, full-time degrees. Plus, for the most part, and depending on your age, there are funding options available. tend would work with your employer to ensure that your pathway was as cost-effective for them as possible, and with you to make sure you were happy and comfortable with everything.
The Career Builders pathway presents a perpetual learning journey, one that clearly demonstrates your intent and ambition for your career, and the longevity you intend to have with your employer. It is also a real and tangible step ladder from where you begin, to where you want to be professionally. Even better, is that you will be in employment, and earning a wage the whole time.
Final thoughts
Apprenticeships are the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to creating opportunities. No matter where a learner starts their journey from, there is a step-by step educational pathway that can carry them to their ambitions, while also adding value to their teams, and employer.
tend’s Career Builders apprenticeship pathway can be mapped out between our team, the employer, and their team member(s) who is keen to climb the ranks. A plan can then be made for their progression and development, so everyone can see the intended outcome of the training, and the potential return on investment of time, and cost (if any).
An apprentice’s journey is a collaborative effort, designed to open doors at every key stage of their career. It creates purpose, provides direction, and ensures success.
